(例) Spaceman

"Spaceman" was first written by someone who, like me, was named Phil and grew up in the State of Ohio. I didn't learn about Phil Ochs (フィル オークス) until a few years ago.

Phil Ochs was a well-known folk-singer in the 1960s who died in 1976 at the age of thirty-six. Many of his songs have political themes. He was against U.S. aggression in foreign countries and wanted the government to fight poverty and racism. He was a friend to John Lennon, and the U.S. government of Richard Nixon considered him and John Lennon to be enemies, because both singers were popular and opposed the Vietnam War.

I am impressed by the fact that the issues in Ochs' songs remain important today.

The song "Spaceman" was recorded on a simple tape recorder in Phil Ochs's kitchen. He plays guitar, whistles, and sings. Here is the only recording Phil Ochs made of this song (click to listen) and here are the original lyrics (click to read).

Please listen to Phil Ochs singing. You can also hear the sound of his kitchen chair!

When I first heard this song, I was impressed by the soft and earnest sound of the singer's voice. I then understood that he was singing about the plan by the U.S. government to send humans to the Moon. Eventually, I decided to make my own recording of the song because:

1. despite Ochs's strong singing, the recording quality of Ochs' song is low;
2. the lyrics, written in 1964, can be updated, since the Moon landing happened in 1969.

So, here is my tribute to Phil Ochs (click to listen): a rewriting of one of his lesser known songs. You might read the lyrics as you listen. The parts that I added to the lyrics are in blue. Click on the image to read.

Some remarks about the language of "Spaceman."

"Way high" is colloquial American English for "very high."

The expression "high" can also mean "crazy." In the 1960s, the expression commonly referred to a condition of being under the influence of drugs. "To be high" means to be under the influence of drugs and, therefore, "crazy."

Ochs uses a humorous image of the spaceship when he says that it is "made of steel." To have a "heart of steel" is to be cold towards others, and especially towards their suffering.

Although Ochs wrote his song in 1964, he was critical of the idea that the space mission would benefit "all of mankind." However, in 1969, that is exactly what the government claimed, and that is what the astronauts claimed, too.

Indeed, American leaders like others to think that their personal political goals are in fact goals for all of humanity.

That is why, when the Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon in 1969, he spoke words that were carefully written beforehand:

"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

Although Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon, his words do not reflect the real purpose of the mission to the Moon. Why, in fact, did the United States government send men to the Moon in 1969?

Exploring space to gain scientific knowledge for the benefit of humanity was not the main reason for the Apollo 11 mission. Rather, the U.S. President who ordered the mission, John F. Kennedy, wanted to prove that the U.S. government was stronger than the government of the Soviet Union.

In other words, the race to the Moon was like fight between two little selfish boys. It was also very expensive. This is how, in private, President Kennedy described his goals:
Everything we do ought to really be tied in to getting on to the Moon ahead of the Russians [...] otherwise we shouldn't be spending that kind of money, because I'm not interested in space [...] The only justification for [the cost] is because we hope to beat [the USSR]...(.) (Quoted here.)
The other way to make America look like the world's leading, most influential country, Kennedy thought, would be to end famine in the Third World by developing massive irrigation channels in Africa and elsewhere. However, this idea was rejected partly because the Vice President, Johnson, wanted financial benefit for his home state of Texas, where the space organization NASA is based. Johnson thought it would help him to become President if he could direct taxpayer money to the State of Texas. (This information comes from here.)

The problem was that, in 1963, only one in three Americans supported the idea of an expensive mission to the Moon. That is why President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson lied to the U.S. public about the USSR having more missiles, and why they exaggerated the scientific benefits of the mission to the Moon.

However, not everyone was fooled by the U.S. leaders.

Phil Ochs wrote "Spaceman" in 1964, at a time when the Apollo mission to land on the Moon was first debated publicly. In these lyrics, Ochs asks if so much money should be spent on space exploration when, on Earth, many children die of easily preventable diseases. Ochs seems to be aware of Kennedy's other, more humane goal of achieving U.S. leadership by fighting world hunger.

Clearly, this other goal has never been met by the U.S. or any other wealthy government. The World Health Organization estimates that about 10 million children under the age of 5 die from easily preventable diseases every year. That is why the message of Ochs' song is still important. The current U.S. government (the Bush Administration) has announced plans to send men to Mars. At the same time, 37,000,000 Americans live in poverty (貧乏).

As this Guardian article explains,
That is 12.7 per cent of the population - the highest percentage in the developed world... Each year since 2001 (the number of poor) has grown.

Why does the U.S. want to be the leader of the world so much?
I hadn't known that there are so many poor people in America still now. I think America should spend their money to save those people.

Do the American people know this? I don't think very many Americans know this. It would be nice if they did.

Thank you for your interesting comment.

The government did not like Phil Ochs. They followed him everywhere and spied on him.

He was killed before the public understood the lie. But even today not very many Americans know that they were lied to.

I do not know the details of their relationship, but they admired one another, and President Richard Nixon hated both of them. The Wikipedia article on Phil Ochs explains that,

Ochs was personally invited by John Lennon to sing at a large benefit in December of 1971 on behalf of John Sinclair, an activist poet who had been arrested on minor drug charges and given an overly severe sentence; Ochs performed at the "Free John Sinclair" benefit along with Stevie Wonder, Allen Ginsberg, and many others; the rally culminated in Lennon making his first post-Beatle-breakup live onstage appearance with Yoko Ono.

Thanks for your question. I don't think Phil Ochs ever lived in hunger. However, he had a big heart and he was able to imagine how terrible it is to live without eating properly, without health care, or without a home.

I answered your group question during my dramatic skit and at my article.

Another reason the US continues the exploration of space today is to have total military control over the planet. If the US government can control space, it can control the Earth even more than it does today.

The question is very difficult to answer in a short space. But there is a small group of "leaders" in the United States, including Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld, who want the United States to control the world and to destroy any country that opposes the US. If the US controls the world, these few "leaders" and their friends will be very rich (even richer than they are today).

Why did you arrange the lyrics more critical? Chigusa Motoyama

Thank you for your question. This is a question I can answer.

I do not believe my lyrical additions are "more critical." Please explain why they seem "more critical." I tried to say the same thing Phil Ochs was saying. There were two reasons why I changed his lyrics:

1. Some of his lines weren't very good. "How much fuel remains?" is not a very good line, for instance, so I replaced it with "Is your glory their gain?" That is a stronger line, I think, but not more critical. It is equally critical, I think.

2. The Apollo 11 mission happened just like Phil Ochs had imagined. He had imagined that the government would claim that their expensive show was "for all humankind." But it wasn't. It was to show that the US could beat Russia (i.e., the Soviet Union). That is why I added the lines,

When you took a step/Onto a big stone/Was it with all humankind?/Or did you leap alone?

Those are words that I wrote, but the critical idea is from Phil Ochs. I do not know all the details of the space program. Perhaps there was something good about it; but I think Ochs's critical attitude is rare and precious. I wish more Americans had it.

In 1963, only one in three Americans supported the plan to send men to the Moon. So, Phil Ochs was in the majority. He was not unique. Most people agreed with him. The government had to lie many times to change public opinion.

Their campaign was successful. Today, very few people remember that Americans used to be critical about expensive space missions that have no clear benefits for the people of the planet Earth.

President Kennedy was so popular among American people but he lied to them about the threat of Russia. Did not he lose his popularity? and Why? Shoko Nishibeppu

President Kennedy lied to the American people about a lot of important things. For instance, he lied about his attempts to kill the Cuban leader and he lied about the reasons why he started the War in Vietnam. Most Americans never knew he was lying. The newspapers and televisions did not explain those things. Today, still, most Americans do not know how much Kennedy and others have lied.

Most Americans do not know that George Bush lies to them nearly every day of the year.

Who is supposed to explain the lies? Not the government... The journalists are supposed to find and explain the lies, but very few journalists actually do their job.

There is hope, however. Bill Moyers and Amy Goodman are two exceptional journalists who explain to the public when the leaders are lying.

I don't know why people think that no one went to the Moon. That was not the topic of my presentation. It was not the topic of my article, and it is not mentioned in the song lyrics. I have not studied all facts and figures about the Moon landing.

I don't represent the government, so I cannot explain their behavior very well. I don't think the American people would support a flight to Mars if they knew all the good things that could be done on Earth with the money.

Who will explain this difference to them? Their television sets? I don't think so...

Phil Ochs experienced many personal difficulties. He had psychological problems that were not taken care of. He was robbed and strangled, and this hurt his singing voice (he believed the government had done this to him). He did not become popular like his friend Bob Dylan, and this hurt his ego. The government constantly followed him.

In the 1970s, he found it difficult to continue writing songs. He took drugs, drank a lot, and eventually hanged himself in a state of great depression.

It was a sad end to a very creative songwriter. He wrote nearly 100 songs, and, in my opinion, many of them are the best songs of his generation.

Thank you for the thoughtful comments.

I think it depends what you mean when you say that "9.11 was the work of the US government." I don't believe that George Bush's administration was directly responsible for what happened on that day. However, his administration, and the administrations before his (including Clinton, Bush Sr., Reagan, and Carter) were all partly responsible for the conditions that created the terrorist attacks.

The US allowed Israel to attack Lebanon several times. The US put its army in Saudia Arabia. The US supports Israel's horrible treatment of the Palestinians.

These are the main reasons why the terrorists targeted the United States. The fact that
for many years the US gave weapons to the radical Muslims in Afghanistan only helped the terrorists become stronger.
